Described as the last great Modernist photographer, Francesca Woodman created some of the most iconic and mysterious photographic images of the 20th century.
Born in 1958, Colorado, USA, Woodman began taking photographs whilst at boarding school in Massachusetts. Over the next few years she went on to create around 800 pictures.
Tragically Woodman took her own life in 1981. She was just 22 years old. Her legacy is an extraordinary series of photographs, which show her tireless exploration of the medium and defy the camera’s fixing of time and space. Her most frequent subject was herself, often nude or with vintage clothing, in dilapidated interiors.
This exhibition presents 23 of Woodman’s photographs: 18 from the ARTIST ROOMS collection and 5 further works lent by the National Galleries of Scotland.
ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is a partnership with Arts Council England and the Art Fund, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection to galleries throughout the UK
