Talks | 23 September 2021 - 23 September 2021
Today, just as in the artist’s own day, The House of Cards has the power to enchant and intrigue. Is this image a simple celebration of the innocence and ingenuity of childhood play? Or does it have a deeper moralising undertone? In this talk, we will explore such questions, among others, by placing the painting in the context of Chardin’s career, his clientele and his artistic influences. While delving into the work’s history, subject-matter, and technique, we will come closer to understanding what gives this little picture its visual power and lasting appeal.
