Cecile Johnson Soliz
Cecile Johnson Soliz is enamoured with both sculpture and drawing. Working across both areas she uses everyday materials such as paper, fabric, wood, paint and a range of drawing tools to create bold and fascinating pieces.
She uses common, simple human gestures and actions like stuffing, wrapping, gathering, stacking and folding in a process of sculpture-making that is both poetic and playful, curious and familiar. In her exhibition at Oriel Davies she is transforming the building, its gallery spaces and the quality of light through ambitious new work.
She says about her practice; “My drawing has always been very physical. Sometimes I draw on paper and it remains flat and is hung on a wall to look at. Other times I use the drawing and paper in a more sculptural way and consider space, light and gravity as part of the work: this makes them become a part of the physical world.”
She combines drawing and sculpture to make playful and thought-provoking works that surprise and entice us into a process of looking and thinking about contemporary art.
Johnson Soliz was overall prizewinner of the Oriel Davies’ Open in 2018 and this exhibition is part of her award. She won the Gold Medal in Fine Art at the Eistedfodd in 2017, and has recently shown work at Galerie Simpson, Swansea (2017) and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2017, 2018).
