During the summer of 2013 a new and alternative Bed and Breakfast will open its doors at Oriel Davies for local residents and visitors to Newtown. ‘Guests’ will encounter a number of objects, sounds and experiences featured within the newly found accommodation.

The intention is to feature work as an integral part of the interior and exterior of the B&B built within the Gallery which might also reflect an individual who has 'checked-in'. Works can include, but not be limited to; furniture, soft furnishings, table settings, luggage, ornaments, photographs, wall based pieces, text, sound, performance and moving image. We are keen to hear from artists and makers working across a variety of disciplines and it is possible (and of interest), that artists may choose to work collaboratively.

Tourism is one of the key industries in rural Mid Wales, and Newtown bears witness to a broad range of visitors to the region particularly during the spring and summer months. Historically the idea of the tourist can be linked back to pilgrims where monasteries were one of the earliest forms of the B&B. However, this term itself was forged in the UK after World War II. At that time numerous foreigners needed a place to stay and local people opened their homes and started serving breakfast to overnight guests. During the 1960s and 1970s B&B’s entered our cultural psyche when traveling and holidays became more accessible. Then and now, the B&B has often been a favoured stopover and alternative to the more sanitised experience of many hotels.

Artists should send outline proposals to include;

Up to 350 words explaining the proposed work for consideration
Up to 10 images
Sound works or moving image (DVD): up to 2 examples (duration no more than 10 mins).
A CV or biography
An SAE for the return of any submissions material (if appropriate)
