Commissioned by Great North Run Culture the video installation presents a group of ten parkour runners as they trace a route across spaces, interacting with and becoming part of the urban, rural and coastal environments and their respective materialities.
Parkour, or freerunning, has featured increasingly in movies such as Casino Royale and The Bourne Ultimatum. Yet Manchot’s film presents a new perspective on this intriguing and demanding discipline: filmed in long takes, the work is at once a portrait of the landscape and of these young people articulating space in unexpected ways. Here it is not spectacular stunts and daring moves but the idea of parkour as a practice and a language of gestures and movements that informs the film.
A short film of the parkour performance at the opening of Melanie Manchot's 'Tracer' on 1st February 2014:
