David Eyres is a visual artist whose work moves between careful observation and improvised abstraction. For In Focus he shows a short animated film, Track (between Pen-y-Bryn and the road), developed from sequences of photographs and sketches the artist has made at regularly spaced intervals along the track which leads to his home near Llanfyllin, Powys.

For several years Eyres painted non-figuratively, but more recently he returned to working figuratively – often from his own digital photographs. Influenced by his practice of Tai Chi and playing music, Eyres responds to rhythm, balance, harmony, sequence, repetition and movement within his works.

In Track (between Pen-y-bryn and the road) these themes unify the work, creating a meditation on simplicity and familiarity. Reflecting on the work the artist writes: “I live at the end of a mile-long farm track. I walk and drive along this track several times a week. What interests me is how the shapes and colours of the forms in the landscape change, mutate and move past each other as I move along the track. I also wanted to explore how loose and playful I could make the drawings without losing the sense of the landscape they refer to.”

David Eyres was born in Brentwood, Essex and moved to Mid Wales with his family in 1995. He has shown work at a number of Galleries around Wales including the Oriel Davies Open in 2000 and 2001.

*In 2009 the In Focus space changed its name to Test Bed
