A Ray of Darkness
The novelist Margiad Evans was born in Uxbridge but got her inspiration from the Welsh Border country. In 1941 she moved to a farm worker's cottage in the Herefordshire village of Llangarron and was inspired to become one of the country's leading nature writers. However, her opportunity to develop this genre was destroyed when, in 1950, she suffered her first epileptic fit, subsequently found to be a brain tumour that killed her in 1958.
A Ray of Darkness is her attempt to come to turns with her debilitating disease and still represents one of the few accounts of epilepsy written by a sufferer.
